An accreditation is the proof of the ability to operate granted by a recognized authority towards those who play a role in a particular social context. The accreditation, in health care, is a procedure established in the early 1900s in the US, but was conceived in England as a tool to guarantee and promote quality. The accreditation is a process of systematic and periodic evaluation carried out by an external party (outside agency or other body). The aim is to ensure that health and social care under consideration are in possession of predetermined requirements related to structural conditions, organization and functioning believed to influence the quality of care. Accreditation is therefore an optional path, but it becomes mandatory for those facilities and health organizations and socio-public and private health, intending to act as potential providers of services within and on behalf of the National Health Service (NHS) or must confirm the public concessions. Such organizations are required to apply for accreditation within the time limits by specific resolutions issued by the respective Regional Council.
The accreditation process consists of two stages:
- authorization to operate: measure whereby the person responsible for the Regional Law (the region of competence) authorizes the exercise of a structure
- institutional accreditation: the process by which the authorized structures, public and private, and individual professionals who request it, acquire the status of a person qualified to deliver health services, social care and social behalf of the National Health Service
